Sylvia Johnson

Sylvia Elaine Johnson was born on September 28, 1966 to Ernest Shannon and Susan Mushatt in Tampa, Florida.  She was preceded in death by her father Ernest Shannon.  She graduated from Ithaca High School where she was co-captain of the volleyball team.She went on to complete an Associate Degree in Business Management from Bryant & Stratton College in Syracuse, NY.  After moving to Birmingham, Alabama she became a licensed Cosmetologist, Certified Notary and completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Virginia College.  She was a supervisor with Jefferson County Family Court and had worked there for over twenty years.The Lord blessed her with two beautiful daughters: Janay and Jayla.  She was an excellent mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, coworker, and Christian friend to everyone she met.  From the time she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer she began ministering and counseling other patients who were going through the same process.   As she traveled back and forth to Newnan Georgia to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America in severe pain herself, she ministered and encouraged all those around her.Sylvia joined Heavenly Places Church of God in Christ after moving to Birmingham, Alabama and was a faithful member until she joined Grace Covenant Worship Center in October of 2001 where she was later baptized with her daughter.  She was a leader in every way possible.  She served as Director of New Members and was a faithful member of the Praise and Worship team from 2002 - 2018.  She was a member of the Women’s Department as a Missionary from 2012 – 2018 and a part of the Church Administration Team from 2010 – 2018.  Sylvia ministered everywhere she went.Her passing will leave a void in the life of her loved ones.  She was an inspiration and a great woman of God.  She leaves to mourn her passing: her two children, Janay Johnson, and Jayla Long both of Birmingham, Alabama; one grandson, Jayden Jackson; her mother, Ms. Susan Byrd of Ithaca, NY; four sisters, Gail Bing of Augusta, GA, Kimberly Shannon of Orlando, Florida, and Donna Hallett (Lucas)of Ithaca, NY, Robin Shannon Malone (Karl) of Houston, TX; six brothers, Ted Day, Donald Byrd, Jr. of Ithaca, NY, Marlon Byrd (Traevena) of Silver Spring, MD, Lyndon Byrd (Melinda) of Virginia Beach, VA, Archie Bailey (Sharon) of Coatesville, PA and Tracy Shannon of  Los Angeles, CA; nieces, nephews, a host of other relatives, a multitude of special children and many friends.Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, January 12 at 11:00am at Holy Hill COGIC with burial at Valhalla Cemetery .
