Frederick Douglas Berry Sr. was named after the famed social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer and statesman best known for his works and writings of the 1800s. He was born February 6, 1945 in the city of Birmingham, Alabama. Educated within the Birmingham School System, Frederick was an avid writer and poet. His love for the American language spurred his dream to eventually have his works published. To that end, Frederick obtained a Certificate of Copyright Registration from the United States Copyright Office in 1980 for his very personal work, “These Words”, (TXU-53709). Later several of his poems were published in a national magazine with global distribution.
Frederick is preceded in death by his parents, Vera Mae Pitts and Will Berry, his brother Frank Pitts, Sr., and his sisters, Claudia Mae Pitts-Hopson and Gloria Pitts-Davis.
His beloved wife Betty Berry of 41 years remained faithful to attend to her husband’s needs until his death despite their separation. Her demonstration of love and respect for her husband in his time of need is unparalleled in modern times and was undoubtedly a tremendous blessing to him throughout their lives together.
Frederick leaves to cherish his memory his only daughter Tara Brooks formally of Akron, OH; his eldest son Fredrick Douglas Berry Jr., his baby boy Richard Lamar Berry both of Birmingham, Alabama, his sister Christine Williams of Jacksonville, FL, his brother Larry Pitts of Birmingham, 10 Grandchildren, 4 Great-Grandchildren, 3 nieces, 1 nephew and countless cousins, extended family and friends.
